Finding Your Purpose

Here it is, the million-dollar question: “what is the meaning of life?” Well, my answer to that question is: You don’t need to know the meaning of life to have a meaningful life. Figuring out what’s meaningful to you and investing more time into those things is a great way to start feeling happier, more motivated, and like your life has purpose. PURPOSE is what makes life meaningful; finding your purpose is what makes life fun. Unfortunately there is no “set way” that works for each individual, however. Finding your purpose is a highly personal and unique experience, but in this blog post, I supply a few techniques that may help get you started on this spiritual journey.

Use the Law of Attraction by setting intention
If you’ve never heard of the Law of Attraction, in a nutshell, the thoughts that you give the most energy to are the things that end up manifesting in your life. In order to use the law in your favor, you should be clear on what you want, and set intention. Some examples of set intentions are: “I work from home”, “I make _ per hour”, “I do what I love for a living”. Write down and try to voice and think about your intention every day multiple times a day as it pops into your mind, because what you’re attracted to attracts to you.

Create a list of hobbies/things that make you happy
This list doesn’t have to be activity exclusive. It can also include objects, memories, smells, or anything that puts you in a better mood. Once you’ve created your list, organize it from most to least important. Doing so will give you a better understanding of what is most meaningful to you, and will put you one step closer to finding your true purpose.

Think about what you’ve always done
When I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I had so many ideas I thought I was passionate about, but they would always fizzle out within a few months. I figured out that writing my feelings gave me clarity, and also made me feel better when I was having a rough time. As I thought about where my strengths lie and what I’ve always done, I realized that I’ve always tried to help people and make them feel good about themselves, and ever since I learned how to write, I’ve always written. I also knew that what I wrote tended to have an impact on people, so I set out to do what I’ve always done by helping others through my words. Think back to your childhood and compare the tendencies, thought processes, and activities you did then to what you do now. If you’re just as passionate about saving the animals as you were then, there’s probably a reason.

Figure out which of these activities garner the most rewards
Do you always win or receive recognition for that activity? Does it make you happy? I am a firm believer that if you are naturally good at something, and success tends to come easily from doing it, then more than likely, that something is your “calling”. I’m not saying this is always the case, as practice makes progress, but if you’ve been gardening for years, read every book there is, and your plants are still dying, then, while gardening may always be a hobby, it probably isn’t what your soul is called to. Plant your seeds in whatever interests you, give them equal amounts of love, energy, and care, and go with whatever flourishes. Doing so will lead you down the path you are meant to take

Trust your intuition
It may be scary at first to actually listen to yourself, but if you’ve “slept on it” for months or even years, and it still “feels right”, then chances are, it probably is. If you still have trouble trusting that “gut feeling”, you can also pray and ask for signs from the Universe. I typically ask to see something three times to know for sure if it’s meant to be. As long as you are observant and open to seeing, you won’t be disappointed.

Completely accept and be thankful for where you’re at
It may seem counterproductive, but being grateful for exactly how your life is right now will bring you a sense of happiness. Beating yourself up because you feel like you’ve wasted time does not aide in figuring out what you could be doing with the time that you have yet to spend. Don’t come into this with expectations and a timeline of when it should happen, just know that it will happen, you’ll figure it all out, and…

HAVE PATIENCE
I am the “go-getter” do everything for myself type. It was extremely hard for me to sit back and let things play out as they should, but every single time, I have found that staying patient reaps the most reward. Patience is a virtue, but it is also a mindset. I believe that what’s meant to be in my life will always come, and each night I say to myself “no matter what happens, I trust that everything will work out perfectly”.

Life is hard. Living a life that doesn’t “fan your flame” is even harder, but if you really take time to sit down and think about yourself and what brings you happiness, you will achieve happiness. Anything is possible. Even if you realize you are nowhere near living your purpose, you can still make a way. Commit to it, do your research, set your intention, have patience, and it will come.
